The export of Italian fruit and vegetables to Europe saw significant growth in the first months of 2023, with an increase of 9.5% in value compared to the previous year, reaching 2.3 billion euros for the period from January in May. This growth has been aided by initiatives such as the \u201cI Love Fruit & Veg from Europe\u201d program, supported by the European Commission and Italian organizations. The main markets for Italian fruit and vegetables were Germany, France and Austria. In particular, some horticultural products such as rocket, carrots, spinach, courgettes and radishes have enjoyed an increase in demand, helping to consolidate Italy's position as one of the largest exporters of fruit and vegetables in the EU.
In terms of specific categories, exports of vegetables and legumes recorded growth of 4.2% in volume and 14.3% in value in the first quarter of 2023. Furthermore, the trade balance for fruit and vegetables improved, despite remain negative in terms of volume, thanks to the increase in exports which exceeded the decline in imports of these products.
